Historic District

Real estate in downtown St. Augustine offers a unique opportunity to enjoy a piece of history.

Many homes date back centuries to a by-gone era, and most have been lovingly restored and maintained.  There are also some rare opportunities to find a gem that needs updating or renovation - a labor of love but also a great way to invest.

Founded in 1565, St. Augustine is affectionately known as "the Oldest City." Originally a Spanish settlement, the current center of St. Johns County was founded 42 years before the English colonized Jamestown and 55 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.

Located in St. Augustine’s Historic District, Aviles Street has the distinction of being the oldest public street in the country. The thoroughfare appears on archival maps dating from as far back as the early 1570s. Spanish settlers originally named the road Hospital Street because there was a colonial military hospital located along the thoroughfare. The name was later changed to honor the Spanish hometown of the city’s founder. A wooden gateway arch at the corner of King Street supported by granite pillars marks the entrance to the historic street.

The City of St. Augustine redesigned the brick street in 2010 to create a pedestrian friendly zone with wider sidewalks, additional benches and landscaping. The setting is more intimate than St. George Street. The street has a wonderful mix of fine dining and casual eateries with outdoor seating, kid friendly menus and ethnic cuisines from around the globe.

Home owners in St. Augustine’s Historic District are surrounded by centuries-old homes that now serve as B & B's as well as museums, including the Miguel O’Reilly House, which was constructed in 1764 and displays period furnishings. Another fine example is the Hamblen-Holiday House that was originally constructed as two separate warehouses in 1889. On the corner of Aviles and Cadiz Streets, you will find the meticulously restored Ximenez-Fatio House Museum, a former inn built in 1798. An interesting feature of the house is the detached kitchen, which was designed to prevent the spread of fires.

Aviles Street, positioned south of the Plaza de Constitution, is home to the St. Augustine Historical Society Research Library, which contains one of the finest collections of materials related to Florida’s history. The library is housed in the historic General Kirby House. You can stop by the Spanish Military Hospital Museum, which demonstrates hospital and apothecary practices from the late 1700s. Constructed on the site of the city’s former jail, the Antiques and Uniques Collectibles is a building noted for its paranormal activity.
